The daughter of east, the champion of democracy Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was born on 21st June,1953 in Karachi to the former Prime Minister and the founder of the Pakistan Peoples Party Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Begum Nusrat Bhutto Isphahani,a Pakistani of Iranian_kurdish descent. She belonged to a well_known family of Sindh and was a Shia Muslim by faith. Her paternal grandfather Sir Shahnawaz Khan Bhutto had migrated to Pakistan, before independence from their native town Bhutto Kalan in Haryana(present India).Benazir Bhutto received her early education from Lady Jennings Nursery School and Convent of Jesus and Mary in Karachi and later, after two years of schooling at Rawalpindi Presentation Convent, she did her O Levels from Jesus and Mary Convent in Muree at the age of 15.Miss Bhutto completed her Alevels from the Karachi grammar School. She was the first female from her family to receive foreign education ,.She studied in the universities of Harvard and Oxford. From 1969 th 1973,she studied in the Radcliff College in Harverd, where she obtained the Bachelor of Arts degree with cum laude honors comparative government .She was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Shaheed Benazir Bhutto described her years at Harvard as four of the happiest years of her life and said that it formed the very basis of her belief in democracy.Later in 1995,as the Prime Minister, she used to arrange gift from the Pakistani Government for the Harvard Law School. From 1973 to 1977,Miss Bhutto studied politics, philosophy and economics at Lady Margaret Hall,Oxford and completed her additional courses in international law and diplomacy. After LMH,she attended St.Catherine's College,Oxford. In December,1976,she was elected as the President of Oxford Union and had the honour of being the first female foreigner to win the presidency of the prestigious Oxford Debating Society.
Miss Bhutto, when came to Pakistan, after completing her education found herself placed under house arrest in the wake of her father's imprisonment and subsequent execution. Her life immediateley changed after the arrest of her father ,Mr Bhutto and from that day,her political struggle began and during his time in prison,Mr Bhutto used to send letters to her daughter and on one occasion,he said 'My daughter Benazir would become Benazir in the history of the Sub_continent' and this was what, she proved. What can be a greater shock than that of not even allowed to see her father for the last time,to attend his funeral and give a last look to him, before putting mud on him,but for what it was done_to remove the name of Bhutto forever from history,to never let democracy come in Pakistan and to derive the poor of their rights....................,to make a worse example of the one,who wanted to defend this country and hand over the power to the people,.!but despite seeing horrible views, spending months in prison,Shaheed Benazir Bhutto continued her struggle and never let the dictators acheive their ends.Having been allowed in 1984 to return to U.k,she bacame the leader in exile of the PPP,her father's party.
Miss Bhutto was married to President Asif Ali Zardari on 18th December,1987 in Karachi and had three children,a son Bilawal and two daughters Aseefa and Bakhtawar. The seat, from which she contested the elections for the post of the Prime Minister was the same, from which her father had previously contested ie N A 207.On 16th November,1988,Bhutto's PPP won the largest number of seats in the National Assembly, and she became the Prime Minister of Pakistan on December 2,1988 at the age of 35. She had the honour of being the youngest and the first Muslim woman to be elected as the head of an Islamic state. Her accomplishments, during this time were initiatives for nationalist reform and modernization, but some conservatives regarded it as westernization. Her government was dismissed in 1990,following charges of corruption, which proved to be completely wrong and lame.In October,1993,elections were again held,in which PPP proved victorious and once again,Miss Bhutto held the office of the Prime Minister and continued her reform initiatives.Miss Bhutto was pro_life and spoke forcefully against abortion.,most notably,at the International Conference of Population and Development in Cairo, where she accused the west of ''seeking to impose adultery, abortion, intercourse education and other such matters on individuals, societies and religions which have their own social ethos. She announced plans to establish women's courts, police stations and women's banks and promised to repeal controversial laws, that curtail the rights of women in Pakistan.Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was an active and founding leader of the Council of Women World Leaders,a network of current and former Prime Ministers and Presidents. She was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Pakistan twice, once in 1988 and for the second time,in 1993,but the dictators never allowed her to complete her five years of rule and everytime, her government was abolished of charge of corruption, which could never be proved till her death. In 1989,she was awarded the Prize for Freedom by the Liberal International.
She was an international leader and worked hard to improve relations between the west and the Muslim World. She was considered as a bridge among them and wherever, she delivered lectures, she made all out efforts to improve the image of the Muslims. She was really a brave and undaunted leader. On 3rd August,2003,she bacame a member of Minhaj_ul_Quran International(an international Muslim educational and welfare organisation). Her husband was sentenced imprisonment for a couple of years ,despite being innocent of the crimes, imposed on him and Miss Bhutto ,during that time, gave her children both love of a mother and a father.During her years of exile in Dubai,UAE,she cared for her three children and her mother, who was suffering from Alzheimer's disease.,traveling to give lectures and keeping in touch with the PPP supporters. She and her family re_united with her husband in December,2004,after more than five years. Her love for her people and her country even increased during that time and after eight years, when in October 18,2007,she came back to Pakistan,to bring back democracy and to fight against a dictator, millions of people came to greet her.....the return of democracy, the arrival of hope.
On 24 November,2007,she filed her nomination papers for January's parliamentary elections and two days later, she filed papers in the Larkana constituency for two regular seats.Although, she received threats ,but she didn't care for them and promised to give the last drop of her blood for her country and on the darkest day of history,on December,27,2007,someone took her away from us forever, when she was assassinated after her public rally in Liaqat bagh,Rawalpindi, where so many of her supporters were gathered. She gave a spirited address to the party supporters in her last campaign rally. After entering her bullet proof vehicle,Bibi stood up through its sun roof to wave to the crowds,at this point,a gunman fired shots at her and subsequently, explosives were detonated near the vehicle, killing 20 people.Miss Bhutto was critically wounded and was rushed to the Rawalpindi General Hospital, where she was taken into surgery at 17:35 and claimed dead at 18:16.
She was buried in Gari Khuda Bux Bhutto in Naudero,Larkana, and was buried next to her father in the family mausoleum at a ceremony, attended by hundreds of thousands of mourners. She was awarded with the United Nations Award for Human Rights in November,2008,which was received by her son and the Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. The international reaction to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto was of strong condemnation across the International community. The UN Secretary General held an emergency meeting and unanimously condemned the assassination.Arab League's Secretary General Amr Moussa said 'We condemn the assassination and this terrorist act and pray to Almighty Allah to bless her soul'.Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that he was deeply shocked and horrified to hear the heinous assassination of Mrs. Benazir Bhutto......My heartfelt condolences go to her family and the people of Pakistan who suffered a grievious blow.European Commission President stated the attack on her,as an attack on democracy and on Pakistan.US former President George W Bush condemned the assassination as a cowardly act by murderous extremists and encouraged Pakistan to honor Benazir Bhutto's memory by continuing with her democratic process for which she so bravely gave her life.Vetican Secretary of State expressed the sadness of Pope Benedict XVI by stating that 'The Holy Father expresses sentiments of deep sympathy and spiritual closeness to the members of her family and to the entire Pakistani nation.'Three days of national mourning were declared in Pakistan on her assassination.Despite for the fact that Benazir Bhutto is not with us physically, but still, she is alive in our hearts,in our souls and will remain alive forever. She is still the ruler of hearts and indeed, rules people from her grave.......................................!!!!!!
Since 1947,although Pakistan was claimed as a democratic country, but the true and real democracy didn't exist. The poor people did not have any voice in the affairs of their country and the tenants were treated as articles of trade by the land owners.Thereby,in Pakistan, democracy never existed. It is said that when the decline of any nation is at its peak, some really great leader are born in that land, who by their blessed abilities change the very phase of the history. The same happened in Pakistan and Quaid_e_Awam Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto brought true democracy in Pakistan, handed over the power to the people and transferred the politics from the palaces to the cottages, his words for the rights spread like fire in the jungle.........Who in true aspect loved Pakistan that much and did so much for its welfare in such a short span of time? He,who never made Pakistan a disputed nation, dependent on the assisstance of the western powers. He was such a great and revolutionary leader who never bowed his head in front of a dictator and instead, considered it better to give his life, instead of living a life of disgrace,as 'to live one day like a lion is better than to live hundred years like a jackal'.
The 4th of April was one of the blackest days in the history of not only Pakistan, but the entire world, when it lost its 'brave hero '.......an undaunted leader and a great ruler!but how those, who killed him, feared from his corpse also,is a part of history................!After his martyrdom, the word BHUTTO could not be removed from history, but instead, became universal, immortal and unremovable. This word became a symbol of struggle for democracy and marked the long history of sacrifices for the sake of giving justice and rights to the poor and the depressed.
Then his daughter Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto carried out her struggle to bring about democracy in Pakistan. She,unlike her opponents didn't use weapons or power to suppress the anti_bhutto campaigns or the voilation of the human rights taking place in Pakistan, but instead, her true patriotism, motivation, determination and her people's support overcame all these movements and she became the voice of the poor and the depressed.Every moment,at every instance,a sologan rose 'JEAY BHUTTO,SADA JEAY'.Braveness and heroism were her basic qualities and she never got frightened of the hurdles in her way,nor could she remain away from her land................even if many of the people wanted so.Her return and then the great welcome, she was given in Pakistan outraged the extremists, but what could they do...?When anger became uncontolable, they used bullets which enabled them to make her disappear physically, but was it possible for them to kill her from the hearts and minds of the people.............?
Indeed, they might have got into sixes and sevens on hearing 'ZINDA HAI BIBI,ZINDA HAI' on her grave after her death and obviously, what can be a bigger threat to the dictators, than that DEMOCRACY IS THE BIGGEST REVENGE,and what can be they more frightened of,than hearing the name of BHUTTO or seeing it,shining like a star in the pages of history,or seeing this name alive in the hearts of the people...................!!!
So much affiliation with nation ,dedication to the cause,in which he believes are great moral qualities, those which are not found like stones in the way.One out of thousands is believed to possess such qualities.Seeing all around, who can be a greater example of it,than Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. When we see her life,we find it absolutely dedicated to a cause. In such an early age,she ,with her own eyes saw the judicial murder of her father, she also saw her mother, facing so much hardships and being beaten, just for the sake of raising her voice for democracy..............What can be a worse example that she saw her both the brothers,murdered...but when we see the patience of that great woman, who, without even saying a single word bore all these hardships and continued her political struggle.Thorns in the way could not stop her,and she remained dedicated to her father's legacy.Allah helps those, who help themselves and he never lets one's efforts go waste,She got the honour of being the first female Prime Minister of Pakistan, being the first in the Muslim World to hold this position and was elected twice, but some extremists could not see Pakistan, developing so rapidly under the leadership of chrismatic Benazir Bhutto and tried all_out efforts for causing her harm.
Her husbamd was put in prison_She herself had to adopt exile,.What a great woman!!!!!!!that she gave her children, the love of both a mother and a father and from outside the country, she led her party and managed its affairs. She rejected all the options and just devoted her her life to democracy and the people of Pkistan.Thereby, she came back to her land, after eight years of exile, even knowing that what could be the result_She didnot care for any of the threats given to her,or any hindrance, which laid in her way and after all, gave her blood for democracy, for her country, and fr her people.....................Her efforts for democracy and for human rights would always be written in golden words, indeed, history is incomplete without her name,.
Being Muslims.,we have faith that a martyr never dies ,and indeed, anywhere,in the world, wherever you go,you can hear this voice
' BIBI KAL BI ZINDA THI,BIBI AAJ BI ZINDA HAI'
Benazir Bhutto is still alive and will remain alive forever.......................................!!!!
Those nations, who are blessed with great leaders are indeed very lucky and same is the case with Pakistan.I really feel sorry to say that Pakistan, inspite of getting such leaders, who could change the phase of the world could not become a developed country, the simple reason is that there are some extremist groups in Pakistan, who can never see democracy flourish, the rule of the poor ,the power of the commom people and most important of all,who cannot see it prosper.Getting leaders like Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, who struggled hard all their lives for the sake of giving rights to their people, giving them a voice in the affairs of their country.....those leaders, who willingly gave their lives even for their countrymsuch great and intelligent leaders are rare to find in the history of the world, those keaders, who gave Pakistan an international image_a status among the nations of the world, but how horrible is to imagine that Pakistan lost 'the Hero of the Muslim World' and' the Daughter of the East'..........why?what's the reason?the reason is known to everyone, just because they wanted to give the layman, the same status as a landlord, because they wanted to give 'bread, clothing and shelter' to their people and that, they wanted to protect their nation, instead of handing it to other powers or making it a tool to play with!for raising voice for the human rights, against tyranny, corruption & dictatorship, against terrorism and extremism and just because of their dedication to make Pakistan a strong nation, but Pakistan unluckily lost them, what can be done now, except repentence,as time is just like sand in your palm,if you hold your hands firmly, you can make something out of it,but if you keep your hands wide open, the sand will fall down and it would be of no use.
How true the words of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto ring today
"Time comes, time goes,we decide, what to do with time".
